In a world where insomnia is a common problem, it can be frustrating to lie awake for hours on end at night. It can be even more frustrating to finally get to sleep only to sleep fitfully and wake up feeling like you haven’t rested at all. Sleeping pills can get expensive and addictive, and oftentimes can upset your body’s natural cycles and hormone levels. There are better alternatives out there. One of them is yoga. There are many different poses that can lead to a more restful sleep, these are just a few of them.
1. Lizard Pose
Start in Downward-Facing Dog Pose. Take a few deep breaths, and bring your left foot forward and sink your right knee to the floor. Ease your left foot to the back of the mat and rest your elbows on the floor. Hold this pose for ten to fifteen breaths on each side.
2. Locust Pose
Move into a plank on the inhale. From here, start Locust Pose. Bring your hands behind your back and clasp them together, then inhale and curl your chest and shoulders up from the floor. Release, exhale, and then go back into Downward-Facing Dog Pose.
3. Head-of-the-Knee Pose
Sit with your legs stretched out in front of you. Put the sole of your left foot against the inner thigh of the opposite leg, lift your arms and exhale. Bend your body over your folded leg. Reach for your foot and hold the pose for ten to fifteen breaths on each side.
